Job Title: Control Room Operator – Powerhouse (DCS)
Department: Operations & Maintenance (O&M)
Reports To: Shift Charge Engineer / Shift Supervisor
Location: Powerhouse control room
Job Purpose
The Control Room Operator (DCS) is responsible for the safe, reliable, efficient, and continuous operation of the powerhouse from the Central Control Room (CCR). This includes direct monitoring and remote control of MAN 18V48/60B and 18V48/60TS medium-speed heavy fuel/diesel engine generator sets, Siemens SGT-600 gas turbines, high-voltage (HV/MV) switchgear, auxiliary systems (HFO/LFO treatment, steam generation, cooling water), and balance of plant (BOP).
Key Responsibilities & Duties
1. Plant Operations & DCS Monitoring
•
Monitor real-time plant parameters via Distributed Control Systems (DCS/SCADA), engine-safety PLC networks (Siemens PCS7/S7, Woodward/MAN SaCoS/MicroNet), and turbine control systems.
•
Safely execute remote start, sync, load dispatch, load sharing, step-loading, and shutdown sequences for MAN 18V48/60B / 18V48/60TS engines and Siemens SGT-600 gas turbines.
•
Maintain grid stability by adjusting active (????????) and reactive (????????????????) power, voltage, and power factor according to load demand and load shedding schedules.
•
Oversee dual-fuel and fuel-changeover operations (HFO, LFO, and Natural Gas) while maintaining Dry Low Emission (DLE) parameters on the SGT-600.
2. Auxiliary System Management
•
Control and monitor fuel oil treatment units (separators, fuel booster skids, viscosity controllers, and pre-heaters).
•
Monitor steam production systems, exhaust gas boilers (EGB/HRSH), auxiliary steam boilers, thermal oil units, and steam/condensate circuits.
•
Monitor engine lube oil, jacket cooling water, charge air cooling circuits, compressed air systems (starting air/service air), and fuel gas conditioning skids.
3. Alarm Handling, Emergency Response & Troubleshooting
•
Detect, analyze, and respond promptly to DCS alarms, trip conditions, and system deviations (e.g., high exhaust temperature deviations, knocking, vibration spikes, or pressure drops).
•
Take immediate corrective action or initiate emergency trip procedures in coordination with field operators during trips, blackouts, or critical equipment failures.
•
Lead black-start operations and island-mode running following grid trips or major power disruptions.
4. Permitting, Safety & Shift Coordination
•
Direct field operators to perform local valve line-ups, mechanical isolations, and electrical racking.
•
Coordinate with maintenance teams to issue Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Work Permits (PTW), and electrical isolations in accordance with HSE guidelines.
•
Maintain detailed electronic shift logs, recording generation figures, heat rates, fuel consumption (HFO/LFO/Gas), operating hours, and equipment trip reports.

Education & Certifications
•
Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, or Power Engineering.
•
Certified training in DCS Operations (Siemens PCS7, Emerson Ovation, ABB Ability, or equivalent).
Work Experience
•
5+ years of hands-on experience as a Control Room / DCS Operator in heavy industrial powerhouses, continuous process plants, or IPPs.
•
Direct operational experience on MAN 48/60 or 32/40 series engines (or similar large medium-speed engines) and Siemens industrial gas turbines (SGT series) is highly preferred.
Technical & Core Competencies
•
Deep understanding of internal combustion engine thermodynamics, gas turbine operation, combined cycle/cogeneration systems, and HV electrical distribution.
•
Ability to interpret P&IDs, Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), electrical control schematics, and logic diagrams under high-pressure conditions.
•
Strong troubleshooting ability to differentiate between false sensor trips and actual process abnormalities.
•
Excellent command of technical English (written and spoken) and effective radio communication skills.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
•
Zero loss of plant availability due to operational errors.
•
Swift alarm response time (< 30 seconds for critical alarms).
•
Adherence to targeted Heat Rate and Specific Fuel Consumption (SFOC) limits.
•
Zero safety incidents under DCS operational control.
